BIOL-L 301 is a 1 credit-hour course on Wed. 10-11am. The course will teach undergraduates to develop a research topic, find information on it, read the literature, critically evaluate it, manage their citations, and put down their ideas in writing. All of the lectures and exercises lead up to the final project, a research proposal for their topic.

L301 will teach the information and writing skills necessary for graduate school, med/op/dent school, or any professional career in the sciences. Also, it gives undergraduates an opportunity to do more thorough research in a specific area of interest.

Prerequisite or corequisite is an upper-level (300 or 400 level) Biology lecture or lab.

If you would like more info on the course, please contact the professor:

Dr. Brian Winterman

You MUST APPLY TO IU FIRST if you’re interested in this program. If you have any questions or need additional information about this exciting opportunity, please do not hesitate to contact Dean Terri Greenslade by phone at 855-8245 or via email at: tgreensl@indiana.edu.

========

Message from Dean Jean Robinson of the College of Arts and Sciences:

Please urge your best graduating seniors who have a strong interest in international affairs to apply for the 2009-2010 Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Students who graduated within the last academic year, but who have not begun graduate studies are also eligible for consideration. Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing cooperation between nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States. As one of the world’s leading think tanks specializing in international affairs, the Endowment conducts programs of research, discussion, publication, and education.

Junior Fellows have the opportunity to work at the Endowment in Washington, DC for the period of one year and provide research assistance to scholars working on Carnegie Endowment’s projects in the areas of: non-proliferation, democracy building, Middle East political reform, energy and climate change, economics, international security, South Asian politics, China-related issues, and Russian and Eurasian affairs.

IU-Bloomington is allowed to nominate two outstanding candidates to the national competition. Students who wish to be considered for this national competition are chosen via an internal competition and then the applications of successful candidates are forwarded to the Endowment. The Carnegie Endowment does not accept direct student applications for this award. Nominees for this competition should be graduating seniors or students who have graduated within the past academic year, but who have not begun graduate studies. If they are selected, candidates must be available to work for one year beginning August 2, 2010. Junior Fellows currently receive an annual salary of approximately $35,000 in addition to a full benefits package.

Students must first register with and pick up important application information in Kirkwood Hall 012 from Terri Greenslade, Assistant Dean for Academic Standards and Opportunities in the College of Arts and Sciences, and should call 855-8245 to arrange a time to do so. The deadline for submission of all materials for the internal competition is: Friday, December 4, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. Complete application packets should be delivered to Kirkwood Hall 012. The College’s internal selection committee will meet in early January, after Fall 2009 grades are official.

Complete details about the Carnegie Junior Fellows program are available at:

http://www.carnegieendowment.org/about/index.cfm?fa=jrFellows

Should you or your students have any questions or need additional information about this exciting opportunity, please do not hesitate to contact Dean Terri Greenslade by phone at 855-8245 or via email at: tgreensl@indiana.edu.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

MEDICAL SCIENTIST TRAINING PROGRAM

PRE-MSTP SUMMER BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH PROGRAM (10 weeks: June 7 – August 13, 2010)

The University of Michigan Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is accepting applications for its Pre-MSTP Program. The program will provide an opportunity for highly motivated and talented undergraduates to participate in a ten week summer research-focused program in the University of Michigan Medical School.

The MSTP is an NIH-funded combined M.D./Ph.D. training program; it takes students approximates 8 years to earn the two degrees. MSTP graduates typically establish careers in academic medicine focused on basic research relevant to human diseases. Clinical medicine generally is a small component of the M.D./Ph.D. career and serves primarily to inform and enhance the research.

For undergraduates potentially interested in the above career path, the Pre-MSTP summer program provides biomedical research experience and exposure to clinical medicine. This may help you decide if this is the right career for you, and could enhance your competitiveness when applying to M.D./Ph.D. programs.

A stipend of $4200 and university housing will be provided. The program will cover transportation costs to and from Ann Arbor up to $200. Students are responsible for providing their own meals.

ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible for the UM Pre-MSTP Program, an applicant must:

Be from an under-represented minority group (African American, Hispanic American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Hawaiian Native, Native of the U.S. Pacific Islands) OR from a socio-economically disadvantaged background OR be a student with disabilities

Be a current undergraduate (excluding those applying to Med/Grad School for 2010)

Be a US citizen or permanent resident

Have completed a science course with laboratory

PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT TO:

Perform full-time research in a faculty laboratory

Attend bi-weekly luncheon presentations where faculty discuss their research

Give short presentations of their summer accomplishments at the conclusion of the program

Obtain clinical exposure opportunities in the form of physician shadowing

Attend the three-day MSTP annual retreat at Higgins Lake

Attend formal MCAT instruction over an 8 week period by the Stanley Kaplan Review Center
