P416 Comparative Animal Physiology

Tuesday and Thursday 2:30 – 3:45
Instructor: Mark Ronan
Fall 2014
3 credits
The world is full of animals whose intriguing and often surprising adaptations enable them to survive in a variety of challenging environments. Barn owls locate small prey entirely by sound during the dark of night. Reindeer, from the moment of their birth, contend with one of the coldest places on earth.  Sea turtles navigate a course around the entire central Atlantic Ocean.

We’ll look at the physiology (and anatomy) that underlies such animal abilities. And along the way, we’ll meet fish that lack hemoglobin, ants walking on stilts, birds that appear to memorize star patterns, toadfish sounding like ship horns, snakes who “see” infrared radiation and the animals that hibernate (strictly speaking, bears don’t).
