Volunteers Needed – Help with SustainIU Week Recycling Blitz * SIGN UP HERE *
The Office of Sustainability is recruiting volunteers to be positioned at waste and recycling stations in the Wright and Gresham Food Courts on Tuesday, February 17th in honor of SustainIU Week. Volunteers will be at each waste station to ask, “Can I help you recycle today?” and educate students about recycling at IU. NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE NEEDED. All info on recycling will be sent via email and posted on-site. We encourage you to sign up for as many two-hour shifts as you like! Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and stickers to hand out! This is a great opportunity for hands-on sustainability outreach and volunteering with like-minded people. A reminder email will be sent on Monday the 16th which will include some final details. Growing Opportunities’ is a new social-business project of the South Central Community Action Program which provides job-training opportunities for people with low-incomes with barriers to employment. Greenhouse education volunteers will assist individuals of varying ages and abilities, such as persons with traumatic brain injury, mental illness, memory impairment, or physical disabilities. Volunteers must be able to tolerate summer heat, occasionally lift heavy items and kneel for extended periods of time. A background in social work, nursing, teaching, or experience working with persons with disabilities is helpful, but not required. Minimum age is 18; 15 if with an adult. The seventh annual SustainIU Week, organized by the IU Bloomington Student Sustainability Council and its member organizations, will focus on “Water Scarcity in the 21st Century” in a series events running from Sunday, February 15 to Friday, February 20. Several exciting events are planned for the week, including a keynote lecture by National Geographic photographer James Balog on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:30 PM in the IMU Whittenberger Auditorium. Wednesday, February 11th- Jim Cason on Climate Change Advocacy Opportunities for Students
Beside the 6 p.m. Wednesday 11th talk at the Monroe County Library on Diplomacy with Iran, Jim Cason of the Friends Committee on National Legislation will talk about what FCNL is most concerned with today including climate change, militarization of our police forces, diplomacy not sanctions with Iran and other pressing issues, in the Maple Room at the I.U. Memorial Union at 11 a.m. on Wednesday 11th to talk about the Young Adult Lobby on Climate Change in DC and other Advocacy opportunities for 19-30 year olds.
Apply to the IUOS Summer Internship Program and Peer Educators Program
The Office of Sustainability is currently accepting internship applications for Summer 2015. These paid internships are open to both graduate and undergraduate students and will be roughly 20 hours per week. More information HERE.
Applications are also being accepted for the Sustainability Peer Educator Program (SPEP). This opportunity is for undergraduate students and does not require a summer commitment, so applicants may be eligible for the Summer Internship Program AND the Peer Educator Program.
