Leonard Springs Nature Day – Volunteers needed!

Leonard Springs Nature Day
On Tuesday, September 29, volunteer to teach area sixth-grade students about our awesome natural heritage through multiple stations including karst, creeks, wetlands, and forests. This program was developed to help kids learn about our environment while meeting state Science standards and getting them excited to pursue future career options in the life sciences.

Greenhouse Education – Volunteers needed!

Greenhouse Education
Keep your green thumb happy by volunteering with ‘Growing Opportunities’, a program of the South Central Community Action Program which teaches participants greenhouse-related job skills. Clients may include people with traumatic brain injury, mental illness, memory impairment, and/or physical disabilities. Volunteers must be able to interact positively with individuals of all ages and varying abilities; a background in social work, nursing, teaching, or working with people with disabilities would be helpful, but is not required. Volunteers work with staff and must be able to tolerate heat and occasional heavy lifting. Minimum age is 18; 15 if with an adult. Apple Tasting at Farmers’ Market 10/3 – Volunteers needed!

Apple Tasting
Apple Tasting returns October 3rd to the Farmers’ Market with the fruit of our area growers’ labors. Find a perfectly meaty, soft-skinned apple for an afternoon snack or a just-right firm and crisp apple for your favorite crisps and pies. Apple Tasting will rock you to the core! When you think of fall in Indiana, you have to think apples. Volunteers will distribute samples of different locally grown apples and join in on the Farmers’ Market Tradition!

Lecture 10/5: “Extreme muscle plasticity in electric fish: cellular and molecular insights.”

Dr. Graciela Unguez will present the 16th lecture in the James P. Holland Memorial Lecture series on Mon., Oct. 5, at 4 pm in Myers Hall 130 (915 E. 3rd St.) on the IU Bloomington campus.

The title of her talk is “Extreme muscle plasticity in electric fish: cellular and molecular insights.”  Dr. Unguez is a professor of biology at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces.

The James P. Holland Memorial Lecture series honors the legacy of beloved faculty member Jim Holland (1934-1998) and is designed to bring awareness of and support to diversity in the life sciences.
